The role of the disc is to shorten the settling distance of solid particles (or droplets) and expand the settling area of the drum. The production capacity of the separator is greatly improved due to the installation of discs in the drum. The solid accumulated in the drum is removed manually after the separator is shut down, or discharged from the drum by slag discharging mechanism without stopping the machine.

There is a group of disc-shaped parts stacked together in the drum of disc centrifuge. There is a small gap between the discs. The suspension (or emulsion) is added to the drum by a feed tube located in the center of the drum. When the suspension (or emulsion) flows through the gap between the discs, the solid particles (or droplets) settle on the disc under the action of the centrifuge to form sediment (or liquid layer). The sediment slides along the disc surface and separates from the disc and accumulates in the large diameter part of the drum. The separated liquid is discharged from the drum through the liquid outlet.

The structure of the disc separator drum has a decisive influence on the use, operation, production capacity and power of the centrifuge. On the other hand, due to the high-speed rotation of the drum itself (its working speed is usually between hundreds of revolutions per minute to tens of thousands of revolutions per minute), it is affected by centrifugal force. Under the action of centrifugal force, great working stress will be produced in the drum body. Once the strength is damaged, it will cause great harm, especially when the stress is too high, it will cause serious personal injury Injury accidents. At the same time, for the high-speed rotating drum, the stiffness of the drum is also very important. If the rigidity of the drum is not enough, the geometric shape of the drum will change obviously. If it is light, the drum will collide with the shell, and the parts will be damaged; if the drum is heavy, it will burst and even cause personal injury.
